In the early pages of J.R.R. Tolkien's masterpiece, The Silmarillion, he describes the Valar, powerful beings who govern the world as servants of the One God (named Eru in Tolkien's mythos). I am intrigued by the description of the Vala named Nienna and the role that she plays to care for the world:
"[Nienna] is acquainted with grief, and mourns for every wound that Arda [the earth] has suffered.... But she does not weep for herself; and those who hearken to her learn pity, and endurance in hope.... [S]he brings strength to the spirit and turns sorrow to wisdom."
